Hortimare’s next step in the innovative seaweed industry

Broek op Langedijk (NL) – Hortimare is the European market leader in the breeding and propagation of seaweeds with an innovative vision on the production of food and plant based resources at sea. The company can now further expand due to a majority interest taken by the family-owned business De Groot en Slot Beheer B.V.

Jan de Vries, managing director of Hortimare, is extremely pleased with De Groot en Slot Beheer as a new shareholder. “This cooperation will allow for further development of the company. It will enable us to remain ahead in the incredibly innovative seaweed industry.“ Gerrit de Groot, managing director of De Groot en Slot Beheer: “We see this as a strategic investment in a new type of crop which will play an important role in feeding a growing world population. Aside from that, seaweed is also a sustainable resource for several industries.”

Third green branch

The family-owned business De Groot en Slot Beheer has more than 190 employees. It is already a global market leader in the breeding and production of onion and shallot seeds. Another green branch is the Intratuin Heerhugowaard and Groenmeesters Hoveniersbedrijf. By taking the majority shareholder’s position in Hortimare, the company has grown its third green branch.

Sustainability

Hortimare is a young business with 10 employees and is specialised in the breeding and propagation of starting material (seeds) for the cultivation of seaweed. The company was founded in 2008 by Job Schipper with a vision of enabling the sustainably production of biomass at sea for feeding the growing world population and supplying it with raw materials derived from seaweed. In the past years Hortimare has become the most advanced supplier of seeds for the developing European seaweed sector. Hortimare owns a unique propagation method and seeding technology and, thanks to years of research on seaweed breeding, has developed species which generate higher yields for the seaweed farmer.
