Technical Support
Technological Development
We have managed the design, building and operation of a variety of hatchery and nursery systems, to produce and deploy seed material of multiple seaweed species. We work from industrialised regions to remote, difficult to operate areas, which requires dynamic problem solving and tailored solutions.
Developing Turnkey Solutions
Developing trusted turnkey solutions across different cultivation strategies is essential in driving the industry forward. We are always on the look out for skilled partners to help us develop these key areas to ensure that the industry is not limited by technical knowledge, and can focus on farming and market consolidation.
Direct Seeding Technology
Direct seeding has the potential to be a key driver in growing the seaweed industry globally. By removing the responsibility of starting material production from the farmer, it allows focused investments in other parts of the process.

Direct Seeding is the direct application of seed onto a cultivation substrate for immediate deployment into the farm. In this process, a binder is used to protect the seeds. This process bypasses the hatchery/nursery period required in twine cultivation, reducing costs and labour for the farmer.
Our team continues to research seed application, substrate, and binder technologies to understand interactions with the farm, once deployed. These learnings are widely shared in an effort to standardise the processes to create a trusted baseline for this technology. In doing so, Hortimare runs a variety of farm tests, with a small machine designed for data gathering, to ensure the essential knowledge is obtained.
Hortimare has invested in a raceway at our facility, where seeding trials are run on novel seeding technologies. We are also using this as a testing place for new seaweed species to better understand how to scale their production.
Land-based Cultivation Technology
In close collaboration with Seaweedland, Hortimare develops land-based cultivation technology for a variety of species including Palmaria palmata, Ulva spp., Asparagopsis spp. and Gracilaria spp.

We design and implement novel raceway technology for a variety of species. Easy to operate water systems guarantee clean incoming water supply and allow us to develop methods to further scale this technology around the world.
Production Support
With years of experience across the team in a variety of technical and biological aspects, Hortimare have developed nursery, hatchery and water systems with corresponding protocols for on site operation at a variety of clients.

By incorporating easy to operate water systems we ensure the quality of incoming water is controlled and reliable. With the right technical foundations, we also train and support clients with their cultivation, from spore extraction to gametophyte handling and induction, to outplanting in the farm. These biological and technical developments, with verified results at partner locations, are an important building block in supporting farmers control their seed supply, and have more predictability in their operation.
