What we are doing
Our Collaboration
Our collaboration with Greener Grazing brings together their expertise in scalable ocean-based farming of Asparagopsis taxiformis and Hortimare’s specialised knowledge in seaweed breeding and hatchery operations. Together, they are working to enhance seedling production and optimise cultivation techniques that will support global efforts to combat climate change through innovative seaweed-based solutions.
To date, the collaboration has achieved numerous breakthroughs in Asparagopsis taxiformis strain selection and cultivation, creating a unique platform to manage the environmental and biological triggers to produce spores allowing ropes to be seeded for ocean-based aquaculture. We will explain more of the strain collection, seeding techniques and hatchery protocols below.
We are grateful for the continuous exchange of knowledge, skills, and even personnel between the two teams. In addition to three full-time researchers based in The Netherlands, one of our team members has been based in Vietnam for the past two years, working side by side with the team at Australis Aquaculture to further support the biological research and protocol development for large scale operations.
Strain Collection
The developed protocols allow us to successfully isolate and maintain a collection of over 150 strains of A. taxiformis and A. armata from multiple geographies, some of which have been in our library for over 6 years. This diversity enables us to run strain selection programs tailored to the farming locations, focusing on growth, reproduction, bromoform content, and high-temperature tolerance.
Hatchery Techniques and Direct Seeding
We are improving coils quality (twine seeding) and direct seeding techniques which we test and validate in the field. To achieve this, building strong collaborations with local researchers and farmers has been essential to creating a robust solution.
Teaming up with Hortimare brings a unique and deep bench of technical and operational capacity to help Greener Grazing leverage the power of seaweed to tackle climate change
