Our Current Opportunities
Contribute to Hortimare’s mission and expand your seaweed knowledge.
Our next internship cohort starts in September 2025 – applications before July.
Biological
Internship: Culture Establishment and Cultivation of Ulva spp.
FILLED
As an intern, you will be tasked with acquiring the skills to isolate Ulva spp. spores and setting up clean cultures, as well as establishing an effective raceway system to scale Ulva spp. cultivation in our facility. The internship will provide a blend of laboratory, molecular and cultivation work, offering a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and techniques in algae cultivation. Your work will directly contribute to our ongoing research and efforts in optimizing algae cultivation for environmental and commercial benefits.
Internship: Contamination Control in Seaweed Cultivation
FILLED – next application period for September 2025
The basis for breeding and establishing high quality production cultures of seaweed is clean starting material. We therefore focus on developing and establishing methods to prevent and mitigate biological contaminations in our cultures, while at the same time preserving the beneficial microbiome. As an intern, you will work alongside experienced researchers and breeding specialists to develop and implement solutions to this pressing issue. With our collaborations and projects with Leiden University and Wageningen, it is also possible to examine the microbiome using a molecular approach. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in biotechnology research and contribute to the development of innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
Business
Internship: Online Marketing & Communication
From: As soon as possible Period: 4-10 months
As Hortimare has taken a key position within the seaweed industry globally, we want to expand our online presence. Within this internship, you will have a big impact on the repositioning of Hortimare from a seed provider to a partner in scaling the seaweed sector and enable the public a better access to our work and services. Highlighting our focus on research, collaboration, quality, and expertise throughout different social media platforms is an essential part in this process.
Technical
Internship: Development of an Automated Culture Mixing System
FILLED
As an intern, you will work on developing an automated and cost efficient electro-mechanical system that enables us to scale our stock culture capacity. Hortimare’s current prototypes are tailored to the needs of seaweed cultures but are labor intensive to operate. Your task will involve identifying ways to optimize, innovate and automate them while keeping track of robustness, operational ease, and other factors. The final product of your internship should be a prototype and ideally a successful test run.
If it is hard to decide or you have your own proposal, you can express your interest in multiple positions and we can decide together what challenge would best fit your skills and ambitions. Send us an email with your resume and cover letter to: hrm@hortimare.com
